Impact of IPv6 on ISPs
For ISPs, IPv6 readiness will help ensure continued growth for the business in the face of IPv4 address depletion and enable them to position their business to address new emerging opportunities. With the very large pool of IP addresses available with IPv6, ISPs - especially the smaller players - will be able to continue expand their customer base, introduce new services or increase their profits through niche player positioning, for example, by introducing services that are not yet commercially attractive for the larger ISPs. Examples of services that will drive demand for IPv6 connectivity include peer-to-peer services such as Voice over IP and new technology paradigms such as smart metering and intelligent buildings.
IPv6 transition also presents ISPs with the opportunity to reduce complexity and costs through the redesign of their addressing plan, taking advantage of the greater flexibility of IPv6 to assign subscriber address blocks more optimally.
ISPs' role in the IPv6 ecosystem
ISPs also play an important role in facilitating IPv6 adoption across the rest of the Infocomm ecosystem. The adoption of IPv6 is a function of a complex set of interactions and dependencies between the different stakeholders such as ISPs, network providers, hardware and software vendors and Infocomm service providers. IPv6 support in the commercial Internet services provided by ISPs and network providers is essential in further promoting IPv6 adoption.

Programme
IDA will continue to work with the Infocomm ecosystem on new programmes and activities to catalyse the adoption of IPv6 in Singapore. It is also monitoring market developments to assess if further measures are needed to aid the transition. Details of these programmes will be announced as and when they are made available.
