NUS, CMU and IDA join hands to collaborate on a concurrent Bachelor's and Master's programme in interactive digital media
|
The National University of Singapore (NUS), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) have made it possible for aspiring talent in Singapore to obtain graduate-level qualifications on a fast track at two leading universities – and build up a portfolio of work while on a scholarship.
This is thanks to a new concurrent degree programme which allows students to graduate with a Bachelor of Computing (Media & Communications) degree, as well as a postgraduate Master of Science (Entertainment Technology) degree from CMU in five years.
Students will spend the first three and a half years in Singapore at the NUS, and the remaining one and a half years at the campuses of the Entertainment Technology Centre(ETC-Global) of CMU where they will largely be graded on project-based work.
Professor Shih Choon Fong, President, NUS, said that against the backdrop of a rapidly shrinking world, universities have a larger role to play in developing human capital. This is where institutions like NUS and CMU are seeking to equip graduates for the global marketplace.
According to Mr Chan Yeng Kit, Chief Executive Officer of IDA, the collaboration is of strategic importance for Singapore because it will produce top-notch Infocomm professionals to help fuel the growth of the country's Digital Media and Entertainment (DME) industry.

Young talent now have a new avenue to leverage on the expertise of two of the world’s leading universities - NUS and CMU

The global DME sector's revenues were at over US$1.3 trillion last year and according to estimates by PricewaterhouseCoopers, spending for the global media and entertainment market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7.3 per cent over the next few years. Growth is expected to be even stronger in the Asia Pacific, at a CAGR of 11.6 per cent.
The DME sector is one of those identified by the Singapore Government as having tremendous growth potential and is one of the three national priority areas for research and development in the next five years as well as being a key focus area under the iN2015 masterplan.
As such, in support of this collaboration, IDA will offer 50 National Infocomm Scholarships (NIS) to talented individuals over five years, starting from 2007. Mr Chan also added that if there is sufficient interest, IDA would consider raising this number.
