The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has become the first public agency in Singapore to win at the International W3 Awards for digital creative excellence, taking home Silver in the “Mobile Application – Maps and Navigation” category for its smartphone app MyTransport.SG. Judging criteria for the category was based on the following factors: creativity, usability, navigation, functionality, visual design and ease of use.
Launched in November 2011, MyTransport.SG provides transport-related information to help users better plan or make more informed decisions for their journey. The mobile app generates at least 1.6 million page-views monthly. One of the features, MyConcierge, is an electronic butler that allows users to customise information such as bus arrival timings, traffic camera images, car park available lots, Electronic Road Pricing rates and gantries, and traffic news to suit their lifestyle.
As an added channel for public feedback, LTA has also introduced a “Snap-&-Send” function in the app. This allows the public to use their smartphones to snap pictures of road infrastructure defects such as potholes on the roads, faulty traffic lights, obstructed signage and damaged railings and bridges, and send the pictorial feedback to LTA from their mobile devices. Since the launch of this feature, over 1,000 cases have been received. The pictorial feedback is routed to LTA’s officers from various departments so that they can rectify the defects quickly.
The W3 Awards, which cover websites, mobile applications, web videos and other marketing programmes, are sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), an invitation-only body consisting of leading professionals from the media, interactive, advertising, and marketing spheres. This year, over 3,000 entries were received from countries such as Australia, Beirut, Canada, Dubai, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, London, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Paris, Turkey and the United States. The winners were announced by IAVA in September.
