ST Electronics will be deploying Passenger
Information Systems in the Rio De Janeiro metro vehicles.

ST Electronics is deploying Passenger Information Systems (PIS) that will enhance the passenger travel experience on Rio De Janeiro metro vehicles in Brazil, by providing comprehensive real-time audio and multimedia information via computerised public announcements and digital display sub-systems.
The two contracts, worth a total of S$9.2 million, were awarded by Changchun Railway Vehicles Co Ltd (CRC), which is developing the Rio De Janeiro metro vehicles for Concessao Metroviaria Do Rio De Janeiro SA.
The first contract, which was signed in May, involves the design, manufacture and commissioning of the PIS, which will be installed in 19 trains with a total of 114 cars. The project is expected to be completed by end-2011. Under the second contract, which was signed in July, the PIS will be installed in another 30 trains with a total of 120 cars, by 2011. Work on both projects is currently underway.
“The growing acceptance and confidence shown by the China market in our rail electronics capability is encouraging. We will continue to work closely and cost-effectively with our partners in China,” said Mr Lee Fook Sun, President, ST Electronics.
Since 1983, ST Electronics has established a strong presence in the rail transportation market in Singapore, China, Dubai, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Other contracts for delivery in both China and export include projects for the Singapore Downtown Line metro vehicles, the Saudi Mashaaser Mass Rapid Transit in Saudi Arabia, and projects in Asia.
To date, ST Electronics has won more than 10 rail projects in China, consisting of a full range of rail electronics systems in Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Shenzhen as well as an Integrated Traffic Command Centre System for the rapidly growing Beijing mass transit network. The Beijing system is the first of its kind in China and provides the city with the benefits of an efficient centralised network-based system for managing its mass transit operations.
