Plans with higher download throughput are better .

Average peak download throughput (or download speed) is the most commonly associated metric with broadband performance. It represents the rate at which your computer will be able to fetch content (e.g. web pages, pictures, music, video etc) from the Internet.

This is the metric with which most plans are sold.

Plans with lower latencies are better .

Latency is the measurement of how long it takes one packet to be sent to one of our test servers, and then returned back to you. This can effectively be thought of as the responsiveness of the connection between your home and our servers out on the Internet.

Latency should be within 50ms for local traffic and 300ms for international traffic.

Plans with lower packet loss are better .

Packet loss tracks the amount of data packets dropped for a connection between the tested plan and the designated server and are rare in modern networks.

Level of packet loss acceptable depends on application. For general web surfing, effects of packet loss may not be noticeable until it exceeds 5%. Other application like online gaming, video streaming and online voice/video calls may be susceptible to packet loss at a much lower level.

About the Charts

Each performance tab plots at least 3 sets of charts.

  • On Net Charts shows the performance of the plan against test servers hosted within the respective ISP. This is the best estimate of last mile connectivity and a good measure of how well the ISP's network is run. For download charts, the reported number tends be very close to the speed of the plan.

  • Local (SG) Charts shows the mean performance of the plan against all test servers hosted within Singapore. These charts are useful to understand the connectivity between the different ISPs in Singapore.

  • International Charts shows the mean performance of the plan against all test servers hosted in a specific country or region (e.g. International (US) averages servers in the US). This measures the international transit performance of the ISPs out of Singapore.

How the results are collected?

  • These results were collected from probes installed in the homes of our test panelists. The tests were conducted during periods where little or no Internet activities was detected. Our test panel consists mainly of volunteers from the public.

Why are there only SingNet, StarHub and M1?

  • IDA requires a uniform setup for all published plans in order to achieve fairness and comparability of the results.

As of this writing, IDA has deployed anonymous test servers in SingNet, StarHub and M1. These 3 ISPs currently represents an overwhelming majority of Internet subscribers in Singapore.

We are constantly evaluating the ISP landscape in Singapore and will consider other ISPs when appropriate.
